Chapter 9

Tara

After a fitful sleep, I woke up to a pounding on my door. “I’m coming,” I called. When I finally answered it, Brynn was standing there with a scowl on her face.

“What took you so long?” She sashayed around me, setting a bag from Starbucks and two coffees on the breakfast bar.

“I had a rough night last night.”

“It was probably best that you stayed in then.”

I didn’t respond, but instead took the coffee cup with a double X in the specialty box. “This one mine?”

She nodded and opened the bag. “You missed a good time.” She set a napkin in front of me and laid an apple strudel muffin on top of it. “We went to Southend and had drinks and danced with some really cute guys.”

“I’m not up for meeting any guys.”

“You say that now.” She perched on the empty stool, casting a sideways glance at me. “But you and Ryan will probably get back together. You always do.”

“Not this time.” I peeled the wrapper from the muffin and took a bite.

“Then it might help you to get over him if you get back out there.” Brynn, never one to be subtle, dispensed advice like they did free condoms at the campus clinic. Her excuse—being a know-it-all psychology major. “So, what happened last night? You look like hell.”

“I didn’t sleep very well. I’ve been having these weird dreams.” As if on cue, Brynn’s hydra showed its ugly face. “I don’t think you’d be interested.”

“Try me.”

"I dreamt about this guy who looked a lot like Alex Pettyfer —you know, the young stripper on Magic Mike? But there was something else.” I took a sip of my coffee as I formed my next words. “I think I know him.”

“You’ve met him before?”

“Maybe. I don’t know...”

"Maybe it's a sign," Brynn said.

My jaw dropped.

"What?” She stared at me innocently. “You look like I just told you that frogs can fly."

"I thought you didn’t believe in signs." Brynn wasn't known for her selflessness. Most of what she did worked out to her own benefit before anything else.

"I don't know that I do. Maybe I'm just trying to tell you what you want to hear and help you feel better. Isn't that what friends are supposed to do?"

There was the Brynn I knew. She wasn't being a total bitch, but she couldn’t be totally unselfish either.

"Maybe it means that you can meet somebody new. We did a whole unit on dream interpretation semester before last in Topics."

"I'm not getting my hopes up." I set down the uneaten half of my muffin. What did I know? Maybe the dream was a sign. Maybe I was going to meet someone new. Maybe it was all bullshit. Only time would tell.

“How about it?”

“What?”

“The end of the year Kappa party the week after finals.”

“Yeah, sure. I’ll be ready to party by then.” I moved to the living room and dropped onto the couch.

“Good, because it might be one of the last parties we go to together.”

“You decided to
